| I have an emachines T1742 desktop that shuts down during boot. It'll start to load WinXP then the cpu fan shuts off and the screen goes blank. I tried a live Linux cd and it'll start loading, then shut down before the boot is done. I reset the cmos using the jumper, double checked to make sure the memory was seated, cleaned and applied new heat-sink paste on the cpu, etc. I tried various versions of Linux, a Win98 boot diskette, etc. and it doesn't appear to quit at any one spot. It seems to be more related to time or load. I'm guessing that the motherboard has quit, but I am wondering if the cpu is running hot. If it were the motherboard, wouldn't it not even begin to load the os? |

I have no idea if this will help, but recently my computer had been freezing and then one day it just wouldn't turn on. Well, the computer would start buzzing and humming once I turned it on, but nothing ever happened on the monitor and it never actually started up. It turned that so much dust had accumulated on the back side of the computer that it was plugging the air holes for the fan's ventilation and the computer was simply overheating. It doesn't hurt to take a look at the back of the computer and simply wipe the dust off of it.
