Hi,
I have had the same problem on one of my friend's computer. He had SATA hard drives and was using SCSI cables for his CD/DVD burner, and with the same problem that you have (by the way, his floppy drive was not working either).

We have checked the drive, the cables, updated the BIOS, played with various BIOS setting... The only time that the DVD drive was recognized properly was when the SATA controller was disabled. It seems that the SCSI controller and SATA controller were conflicting.

In your case, you may want to try to change some of your BIOS settings to try to get that DVD burner working. In my case, we ended up purchasing a SATA based DVD burner and bypass all components using SCSI (large flat cables), as I did not want to spend more time on it.

The problem is simple. Your transport it jammed, likely due to vibration or some shock to the system that you may not even be aware of. The transport for the laser head moves too far toward the centre of the spindle and gets wedged in just far enough that the transport mechanism can't move it back. Here's what you do...

Open the DVD rom bay on your laptop.

Very carefully remove any dust or debris from the area around the laser head with a cue tip or gentle microfibre cloth, like the type used for cleaning monitors or lenses. BE GENTLE! You scratch that lense you are buying a whole new DVD drive.
