Hallo,
I have opened my pc and took it apart. EVERYTHING. Disconnecting everything from the motherboard, took it out, took out my power supply, took out harddisk and CD rom. Then build it back together. When I switch it on, it goes on to a screen that says PRESS TAB TO PROCEED TO POST SCREEN OR END TO ENTER SETUP. There it stays for about half a minute.
Then goes to a screen with a small line flickering at the top left of the screen, there it stays for about another 30 seconds, then it starts up normally and everything seems to work. But my PC never took that long to boot up. What can be the problem? Hardware connected wrongly? A BIOS setting? Please HELP!!!!!!

Hi,
Go to BIOS, change your "boot sequence" to have your hard drive as your first boot device, save settings and reboot. That should solve both issues.
For your own knowledge, "PRESS TAB TO PROCEED TO POST SCREEN OR ..." is normal, there is an option in your BIOS to disable your manufacturer's logo at boot or enable viewing POST screen.
The cursor is that some other device than your hard drive has boot priority and only when your computer notices that that device does not hold any bootable partition, then only it switches to your hard drive.
All is well.

The only way to fix this is to run the Windows Recovery tool from a Windows Installation CD/DVD. This Windows CD/DVD has to be the same version of Windows that is on your hard drive (XP Home, XP Pro, etc,). Place the Windows Installation CD/DVD into the disk drive and reboot your machine. When the prompt that says "Press any key to boot from CD...", Press the Space Bar and let the Windows Installation program run. When the initial screen loads, your will be given three options. Press "R" to run the Recovery Tool option and let the Windows Install program try to repair the damaged files.
