Before you try what I list below, try running a full hot water cycle with a cup of bleach (no clothes or items in the barrel). Run the rinse on hot as well. This may be all you need to remove the smell. If that doesn't work, see my experience with it below.

I had this happen to me after I had washed some cotton pillows which burst in the machine. Over time, my washer began to smell like dirty diapers, though I had no children. I thought i had cleaned it out properly, but was unaware of the buildup on the outside of the barrel (which, being enclosed in the machine, I could not see).
