I'm adding memory to my new laptop. I understand that I should wear an anti-static wrist strap when I do this.
Should I clip the cord on the strap to the laptop I'm working on, and does this serve as a ground even though the laptop is unplugged?
Best, David. |

You should connect it to any big piece of metal (not over the paint) that is available (water pipe, filer, ...) but NOT on your laptop.
You want all your excess charges and your laptop's excess charges to be distributed back to the environment. SO touch a grounding surface with one hand and the laptop outer cover with the other one to make sure you drain all the accumulated charges in the ground.
Connecting your wrist strap directly to your laptop will only put you and your laptop at the same voltage (no electricity flowing) but you will still have a difference of potential with the ground that is why it is best not to connect to your laptop! |
