Hello,
I have had this problem with two of my computers and I would like to know if I should throw them away of fix them. One of my computers will come on but there is no picture on the monitor. There is not beeping sound. The monitor will say no input but then black out. Do it need a new video card? It says geoforce 6100 pci. Can I use any type geoforce pci card as an upgrade intall or do I have to buy the same 6100 card to install? Also I have one that will not come on anymore after the usb got fried. The usb is integrated. I know I have to put in a new power box but how do I put in a new internal usb when the system is intergrated? |

Hi,
On your first computer, it seems that your video card is the problem. You should make sure that it is properly inserted in the slot on your motherboard. If that does not solve the problem you might have to test your computer with another card from another computer. Obviously all video card are not the same but any Nvidia GeForce 5000, 6000 and probably 7000 series would work fine on your computer (regardless of how many megs the card has). Although you mentioned that the video card is PCI, I would strongly doubt it, unless it is more than 12 years old, I would guess that it is a standard AGP card. One way to find the most appropriate card for your computer is to find out what speed is your motherboard's AGP slot (as a guess it would be 8X) and as mentioned above all 5000, 6000 and 7000 series should be compatible.
Regarding the second computer, it seems that the power supply is fried. Try it using another computer's power supply or just go and buy one (usually between $30 to $50).
Good luck! |

| Thank you for that info. What about the USB? It is integrated and I think I will have to install a new internal one. How do I do that? Will I have to change any partitions? I have six USB hook ups on the computer and they will not work because the main one is shot. |

For your USBs, first check them one by one because there may be a few that still work. The way you do that is to find one of USB appliance that shows you a pilot light when connected to a computer USB port.
Hopefully you will find one, otherwise you can just buy a PCI card with 4 USB ports on. Again it is very cheap (less than 40$). If the original internal USB are fried you either have to change the motherboard or find a really electrician to fix them (and will cost $$$).
Hope that helps. |
