I am trying to play some music off the internet.

I have Fedora Linux and when I try to play Winamp media stream, I have the Totem Movie player that opens up but is not able to play the music.

Do you know what I can do?

The best option is to install the best multifunction media player that we know: VLC (videolan).

Simply go to their download website, select the Fedora version that you have, download and and run the rpm file.
Then on your desktop, click on applications, select add/remove software, (put your root password if not on root), click on the Lit tab, then find VLC on the list and click Apply.
That should take care of the installation of VLC on Fedora Linux.

Now you just have to retry to play your music, but make sure that you select VLC as the default player!

The great thing about VLC is that it will play almost all types of media files (avi, DVD, mp3...).

Let us know if you need more help.

Ubuntu is NOT easier. However Fedora uses pulse-audio which runs on top of Alsa. OSS is used somewhat in KDE and /dev/dsp is an OSS thing. If you know what your sound card is, fine. Now the problem with answering this is that both Ubuntu and Fedora are starting to get away from generic Linux so what I'm about to say first may not work. Do you know what your sound card is? Open a terminal and type lsmod. If it doesn't work become root (su -) and type lsmod.

is computer software that is available in source code form for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that permits users to study, change, and improve the software.

Hope that helped! =D
