I have a Gateway FX6000 series that I bought about 18 months ago (spring of '09). When I tried to start it up the other day, nothing. No sounds, no fan movement. The power had been out at my home when I was at work and even though I have a surge protector I fear something may have happened.

So I bought a replacement power supply. The original was 450W, the new one is 500W. I hooked it up and turned it on. I get a message on the monitor saying, in red text, "You have not connected the power cable to video card".

Nothing further. Any suggestions?

Someone I know suggested that perhaps I can't use any power supply, that I have to buy one from Gateway (the replacement I bought at Best Buy). Any truth to that?

The fan on the graphics card was moving very slow. So I bought a new one (that supports 2 monitors). Put it in and the computer booted right up. Installed drivers.

But the second monitor is not working. It has power but the card is just not finding it.

Thoughts?

Yes it is obvious that for people who have never worked on a PC before, the power supply is one of the toughest components to replace simply because of the large number of connections. In very short replacing the power supply required removing 6 screws in all, two to release the side of the case and four to remove the old power supply.
