I have a problem with my cd rom drive, by the way i'm not fluent in english so please try to understand. The problem is this, when i am loading a cd on the drive, my computer will freeze and i can't do anything. The only way i can access the cd (which is my intention is to copy the files from the cd either music or movies to my pc) is to reboot my pc. After reboot then that's the time i can access it. Another way is to insert the disk before my pc gets into the main desktop (after log-in), but it's not hundred percent that it will not freeze, sometimes it also freeze. In short, when on the main desktop and you insert the disk, it will freeze.

What causes this problem, and how can i resolve this..,
Thnx.

Hi Marvic,

I would assume that you tried a fiew CDs, (music and programs), also that your computer is XP.

Please verify that your CD ROM's SCSI cable (the long flat cable at the back of CD ROM) is connected to the right place (black or grey plug but not the blue plug!) on your motherboard. Check that the jumpers on CD ROM are properly placed (if any at all!)

Have you tried to boot in Safe Mode and test the CD ROM?

Let us know how that goes and we'll continue from there if necessary.

Hey Fonz, thnx for your reply, you guyz are very helpful, I'm very lucky to find this site. By the way i'm from Philippines that's why i have some difficulty telling my problems in english, haha. I'm not on our home right now that's why i can't test the possible solution you gave, but i will try it as soon as i get there. Yes, im using Windows XP, i think it's a Home Edition. Any kind of cd i've insert wether it's a music, program, movies, wether it's new or old one, it really freeze my computer when i insert it on the cd rom drive when my pc is on the main desktop. And by the way i think i'm not using SCSI cable on my CD rom drive, i think it's an IDE cable. I Have not yet tried to boot in safe mode and test it, and how can i test it when my pc is in a safe mode, is it when my pc is on the safe mode i will insert the disk on the drive and test it if it will not freeze? And for the jumpers, where should i put the jumpers to make it on proper place (assuming that the jumper is not properly placed.)? So many questions right, just want to make sure what im going to do..thnx Fonz, your great.!

Check CD ROM manufacturer's setting for the jumpers (or just take it off and test),

Then if it does not work, test it in Safe Mode http://www.fixingmycomputer.com/Windows-XP-recovery/safe-mode.html

then you should test you CD drive with a boot CD http://www.fixingmycomputer.com/hardware-test/Ultimate-Boot-CD.html (or use your windows CD)

if it did not work, it might be a windows problem and the way to fix it is available through Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

Good luck.

find your manufactureres driver files
dell/hp/sony all have their drivers online, google for them.
